The homeowners wanted to modernise the interior while carefully preserving the home’s traditional charm and original timber features. Working as experienced builders in East Sussex, the team delivered a complete internal refresh including plastering, boarding, lighting upgrades, new flooring and full redecoration throughout the property.
Client: Private Residential Project
Project Duration: Six Weeks
Completion Date: October 2025
Battle, East Sussex
While working in Battle, our team enjoyed being based in such a historic setting. We took the opportunity to visit Battle Abbey and walk around the grounds, which was a real highlight during the project. We also regularly picked up food from Truffles Bakery on the High Street, supporting local businesses while completing the works.
The key objective was to update and modernise the interior without compromising the home’s historic features. Specific challenges included:
• Removing dated finishes while protecting original timber elements
• Improving wall and ceiling surfaces without losing character
• Integrating modern lighting and flooring into a traditional setting
• Delivering a cohesive finish across the entire home
The homeowners required a trusted local building company with experience in character property refurbishments and attention to fine detail.
Asletts carried out a carefully phased programme of works over a six-week period, ensuring quality and consistency throughout.
Key works included:
• Strip-out and preparation:
Complete removal of existing wallpaper, with all original features protected during works. Walls and ceilings were assessed to determine areas requiring boarding and plastering.
• Boarding and plastering:
New plasterboard installed where required, followed by full skim plastering to achieve smooth, modern surfaces while blending seamlessly with existing features.
• Timber restoration:
Original exposed timbers were carefully cleaned, repaired where necessary, and refinished to highlight their natural character and become a key visual feature of the home.
• Lighting and electrical upgrades:
New lighting installed throughout key rooms, with improved fittings and repositioned fixtures to enhance ambience, brightness and functionality.
• Flooring installation:
Removal of old floor coverings and installation of new flooring chosen to complement the refreshed interior, with precision detailing around staircases, doorframes and timber features.
• Full decoration:
High-quality painting of all walls, ceilings, doors and woodwork. Colour schemes were selected to brighten the property while respecting its traditional style, resulting in crisp, clean finishes throughout.
The completed refurbishment has transformed the home into a bright, cohesive and welcoming space that feels both modern and authentic to its heritage. Key results include:
• Smooth, high-quality plaster finishes throughout
• Fresh, light-filled interiors with a modern feel
• Beautifully restored original timbers as standout features
• New flooring and lighting that elevate comfort and usability
• A refreshed home that retains its original charm
The property now enjoys a renewed sense of space, warmth and character.
